Especially at Christmas, you want to set the dining table beautifully to enjoy the festive atmosphere while sharing a meal together. A stylish and elegant look doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. A table decoration with just a few readily available items and a couple of simple steps can transform your dining table into a festive Christmas setting in no time. Here’s how to create a little winter wonderland on your table :
Table of Contents
What you need for festive table decoration:
- a plain-colored fabric tablecloth in green, red or white
- green cloth napkins, or alternatively green paper napkins
- a few real or artificial fir branches
- Approximately 6 decorative trees of varying sizes
- small real pine cones
- Tealights and matching glasses
- Optional scatter decorations such as wooden stars and cinnamon sticks
- optionally two mini poinsettias in a pot
- optional small deer figurines
The foundation: the tablecloth
A fabric tablecloth is the foundation of our festive table setting. It instantly lends the table a festive air. Investing in a high-quality cotton or linen tablecloth, for example from So Cosy , is worthwhile, as it lasts for many years and can be used for various occasions. The tablecloth forms the basis of our Christmas table decorations. It looks particularly elegant when the tablecloth and napkins are the same color.
Napkins as decoration
Cloth napkins are sustainable because they can be washed and reused. Visually, they instantly give a table setting an elegant finish. They can be used in a variety of ways for decoration thanks to different folding techniques. Green cloth napkins are best suited for our Christmas forest table setting, as they are even more reminiscent of fir trees. If you can’t find green cloth napkins, you can use green paper napkins. Just make sure they are dyed all the way through.
Folding Christmas tree napkins step by step
- Place the unfolded (four-ply) napkin diagonally in front of you on the table. Turn the napkin so that its closed corner points upwards.
- Take the first open point at the bottom and fold it upwards – until an edge about two centimeters wide is created there.
- Repeat this process with the remaining three tips.
- Carefully turn the napkin over, holding the folds firmly.
- Fold the right side of the napkin inwards as shown in the illustration.
- Then fold the left side over the right so that both halves overlap.
- Turn the napkin over so that the points are facing downwards. Now pull up the top point.
- Repeat the process with all layers, hiding the tips under the previous layers.
- The Christmas tree is now finished. If you like, you can add a cinnamon stick as a trunk and decorate it with a small star.
Set the table
Now we’ll set up our table decorations: First, place the plates, cutlery, and glasses as usual. It looks even more festive with charger plates. Place the napkins, folded into Christmas tree shapes, in the center of the plates. If desired, you can add a cinnamon stick (as the trunk) to the napkin trees and top them with a star.
Next, find the center of your festive table and place a round wooden board there. This will later be used to arrange the food, for example, our antipasti Christmas wreath (see below). Now, arrange the branches around the board. Add the small decorative fir trees, poinsettias, and pine cones, as well as the small woodland creatures (optional). Tealights in suitable glasses will provide a cozy glow.
Antipasti Christmas wreath as an appetizer
A rosemary wreath decorated with antipasti is a beautiful sight and integrates perfectly into the Christmas table setting. Rosemary not only has a pine-like aroma, but its branches also visually resemble those of a fir tree.
Simply arrange the rosemary sprigs in a circle on a plate or round board. Scatter a few olives, cherry tomatoes, small mozzarella balls, and stuffed peppers on top – and you have a delicious appetizer that also makes a unique table decoration.
Happy Holiday!
