Lumen, Kelvin, Ra: What the terms on the lamp packaging mean and what you should look out for when buying a lamp.

For years it flooded the room with light, you could rely on it in dark hours. But one day the lamp gives up its service and is burned out. A new one is needed. But which one is the right one? The instructions on the packaging for Lumen or Kelvin are intended as a guide, but sometimes confuse. What does the information stand for and what should consumers heed when buying lamps? A guide through the jungle of lighting concepts.

Anyone who talks about buying a new reading lamp in everyday life often means the frame itself – with the shade, arm and foot. This device is actually called a lamp. It is mounted on the ceiling or wall or has a stand. Each lamp has a socket in which the lamp is screwed or inserted. The light source, on the other hand, is called a lamp: It is used as a light source in lights or headlights.

LED stands for light-emitting semiconductor diodes. There are electronic chips in the lamps, the semiconductor crystals of which glow when the power is supplied. LEDs are far more efficient than light bulbs or halogen lamps, which, as so-called temperature radiators, emit light when they are heated. The incandescent lamp, for example, only emits five percent light, 95 percent evaporates unused as heat. LEDs, on the other hand, don’t get hot, so you can’t burn your fingers or bleach your clothes on them. The tiny light-emitting diodes are also easy on your wallet and the environment, as they contain no mercury and are 80 percent more efficient than incandescent lamps.
